Chiltern Railways is to start trialling Bluetooth payment technology - allowing you to "pay" for you ticket without taking your wallet out of your pocket.
The idea is that beacons will detect you at your departure station, and again at your arrival station and deduct the appropriate fare from your registered account.
The next stage on from Oyster and contactless payments? Only a 60 passenger trial pool at the moment but further evidence of the direction of travel by the industry towards paperless/ticketless solutions.
The trial will use ‘beacons’ which register passengers as they step on to a train and exit a station, debiting their bank account accordingly.
