Netflix has announced two new live action children's series – one a reboot of 'the Worst Witch' (a new adaptation of Jill Murphy's books, to be produced in collaboration with CBBC and German broadcaster ZDF), and an as yet untitled 'horse mystery' project.
The move marks the SVOD giant's first foray into original British children's content, and as the Telegraph reports, represents the latest attempt to gain ground against rivals Amazon and Sky.
After the steady decline in available funding from the traditional linear broadcasters over recent years, the prospect of new sources of finance for children's content from the big SVOD players has got to be good news for producers.
And if kid-focused offerings become the latest battleground for SVOD supremacy, we might see something of a boom in demand for quality original content – perhaps even forcing the more established players to up their game…
