With the Olympics getting underway lots of us in the property industry will no doubt be inspired to take to the slopes. It may be worth getting out there sooner rather than later since the cost of the annual ski holiday together with the ski chalet market to Brit investors could be under threat.
A new report has warned that the loss of 25,000 seasonal holiday jobs caused by changes to European legislation could push the cost of ski holidays up. Currently, as Britain remains part of the European Union, the UK tourism industry can employ British staff to work in places such as the French Alps under the European Single Market’s rules on free movement of labour. If, when Britain leaves the EU in 2019, new laws and regulations are created that make it costly or impossible for UK staff to carry out these roles, the cost of ski holidays may rise and thousands of jobs could be lost.
