It was previously reported that Martin Lewis (Mr Money Saving Expert) had issued defamation proceedings against Facebook in relation to adverts on the website showing his (fake!)endorsement for financial products. The basis of his claim was that the fake adverts had caused serious harm to his reputation.
Eight months on, the parties have reached an agreement and Mr Lewis has dropped his claim. According to the BBC, as part of the settlement Facebook will donate £3m to Citizens Advice, which will set up a project aiming to combat, and assist the victims of, online scams.
Both parties appear to have come away from the case in a positive light and it is an example of how active brand protection and even litigation can be turned into an opportunity for positive brand promotion.
Facebook's regional director for northern Europe, Steve Hatch, said: "We're grateful to Martin Lewis for bringing attention to this important issue and for his guidance over the last eight months."
