Landmark ruling on pensions for cohabiting couples

By Jessica Pitt

An important High Court decision has been reported emphasising the unfairness of the current legal system for cohabiting couples.

In this case a woman has won the right to her late partner's military pension

Cases like this one take small steps forward towards legal reform for cohabiting couples but there is still a need for wholesale reform to remedy the unfairness of the current legal system.

The judge ruled that the discrimination in the rule was "unlawful and cannot be justified or proportionate in Ms Langford's case". Sonia Bamford from Candey Solicitors, which represented Ms Langford, said the ruling was "a gateway to justice" for others who had been denied pension rights following the death of a partner.
